Presidents Message
Shalom
I would like to introduce myself
as the new President of the Nassau County Shomrim Society. I am Lt
Saul Roth of the 4th pct. I have been a Nassau County
Police officer for 19 years and was a NYPD officer prior to
entering this department. I joined the Shomrim Society upon
entering the department in 1990.
Of course I would like to increase our
membership in the organization. But feel it is more important to
increase participation. With increased participation the word
should get around and more will join.
I would like to plan some trips with
members of the society. I plan on starting small and if it works
plan larger trips. I was just on the phone with The Jewish Museum
in NYC. How many of us have been there or even know it exist. I
would like to do a Sunday trip for a few hours. The museum has a
café and with enough participation we can rent a private room.
For our less cultural members (only kidding) I thought an Atlantic
City Bus trip might attract some members
The Shomrim Society is not just for
religious or practicing Jews. Anyone that knows me can tell you I
am a very reform Jew. As a veteran of the armed forces I always
consider myself an American first. But I am an American Jew. When
the Nazi’s rounded up Jews in Europe they did not ask if they were
practicing Jews or not. You don’t have to be Jewish to eat Levi’s
and you don’t have to be orthodox to come down to Shomrim.
Camaraderie with those of your same
heritage as been with us throughout the history of this country.
During the US Civil War proud Irish units fought together under
their Irish flag. Upon the Civil War ending many people in the
country were stating that not many Jews served in the War.
Because of this the first armed forces service organization was
formed, The Jewish War Vets. There were not enough Jews to fight
under a flag from a certain area but there were enough to form the
organization and let the country know that 7% of the Jewish
population served for the Union cause and that was consistent with
the average percent age of the population that served. Many of
your fathers and grandfathers of the greatest generation might be
members now for the camaraderie
I’ll get off my soapbox now and let
you know what is going on. Last year we did not have a breakfast.
There were many reasons for this. The board is working hard now so
that does not happen again. So standby to hold a date some time
probably in May for the Breakfast. If you don’t do anything else
in Shomrim you should come down to the Passover Food drive. It’s
the most rewarding thing our society does when we deliver Passover
food to needy persons in our county.
I would like to post a Presidents
message every few months. I only know what’s going on with
everyone if you inform me. So if there is any health and welfare
update let me know. Or let someone else know who will inform me.
The next meeting of the Shomrim
Society will take place on Wednesday January 13, 2010. Please come
down for visit. You can stay a half hour or you can stay two
hours. The choice is yours.
Have a Happy Chanukah, Merry Christmas and
a Happy New year.
Hope to see everyone in 2010
Saul
Roth
